My First Real Job

This past April I received a phone call from someone at the college of business where I am currently a student. She said that my computer professor recommended me for a data entry summer job at a company here in town. I could not believe it! I went for an interview and spoke with Ms. Debra. I had no experience, except for house cleaning jobs. Amazingly, she hired me. As I am a very quiet person who tends to think before speaking, I became very inspired by my new boss because her quiet leadership contradicted my view of leaders as being outspoken and extroverted. I worked all summer, and she even decided to keep me on part-time while I went to college this fall. Unfortunately, business was slow and a decision was made within the company to downsize, big time. This week I was called into Ms. Debra’s office, and she told me that they had to let me go. I was upset, but I understood. Many, many people have lost their jobs as well, including people (I’m sure) who have been with the company for many, many years. It was hard leaving, but I told everyone goodbye with tears in my eyes. I am so thankful that Ms. Debra gave me an opportunity when I had no real job experience at all. She took a chance on me and I know I proved to her that she made the right decision.
